I'll pray for you = I wish more than anything to take your pain and/or problems away but I can't and/or don't know how. So I will be hoping that someone will come to help you that can do what you need done. But just know that I see you are in help and/or pain and I want you to know I recognize you are truly in need of help and/or guidance. But seeing is I am unable to do so I just want to let you know I am sorry you are having to go through your troubles.

Did this one well already- but I have to add my take anyway. “I’ll be thinking of you..” “praying for you...” “good luck...” “sorry...” Someone’s mom just died, they lost their job, a hurricane hit. They are here telling you about it. Ok. The social awkward here can relate this next part- what do you say? Nothing you can say can undo the thing or stop the hurt. Should you say nothing? Nod and move on to talking about the weather, or sit in silence? Maybe sometimes. But let me flip this on you- not everyone is so emotionally disconnected from humanity that the kind words of even a stranger may not at least make them feel heard or like someone cares.
If you can do nothing- if circumstances are that you aren’t going to do anything- then what? Can’t unkill mom- you can give money, that helps with expenses but doesn’t help pain. You could donate a blanket or something to a person without a home- but every day billions of people need water, a blanket, food. If you’re gonna give even $1 to every person who truly needs something more than you- you’ll run out of dollars before you’ve made it more than a few hundred miles from where you live. So sometimes you COULD help but you’re tied up. We could all give more- most people have more than they need. But we can at least give a kind word.

On the one hand I totally agree, on the other I just let people think they're being comforting because there's literally nothing they can do about it anyway.
