We can agree that it isn’t the video games- but you’re just as guilty as the media goof offs trying to pin it on video games to make an easy target if you’re going to simplify it down to either guns or video games. An obvious difference between the US and many other developed countries that have less gun crime is- well- less guns. With exception to some countries with very low gun crime where gun ownership is very high.
But Japan has about 1/3rd the population of the US and yet- has about 20,000 suicides a year vs The US 40,000. That’s not only disproportionate to population size- but a much higher percent of the population. So then by the same logic based on your facts would you say higher video game consumption causes higher suicide rates? The two MAY have some correlation- it may be that the same people who are more likely to play more games than do other things are more likely to commit suicide- but are the reasons they play more games and the reasons they commit suicide just the same? Does playing more games lead to suicide? Is it just a spurious correlation? Is it something else?
If you want to look at differences between the US and Japan there are PLENTY besides games and guns. Same with other developed nations. Culture, history, social and economic differences and more. The fundamental way people live their lives are different- and here is a shocker. When you look at the number of gun deaths in a country and compare that to overall crime rate- wow. Countries with lower crime rates tend to also have less gun deaths. America- a world leader in crime and incarceration, with punitive justice and a comparatively weak social welfare system... has more gun deaths than other developed countries that score better in these areas as well as general satisfaction of citizens with their lives and the world. But yeah. It’s probably the guns. It’s gotta be that or video games right? I mean- there is absolutely no other possible causes for America’s high gun (and non gun) homicides.
"The nail that sticks up gets hammered down". Nevermind how cruel Japan is to suspects, or how the culture is literally killing them off.
Nah, I'll take the right to do wrong over conformist conditioning and suicidal work ethic.
I watched a video on how Japanese policeman basically keep a suspect in custody for years until they confess whether they did it or not. It’s just easier to confess
I don’t know why y’all got dv. Upvotes. The Japanese legal system has flaws that are well known. Suspects do not have protections common other places. Police can question and coerce Susie TD without letting them have a lawyer or even see anyone. Japan has a 99% conviction rate- and most of those are from confessions.
Recently- a threat was posted to attack a school. Police began the investigation and got 2 confessions from 2 people who not only didn’t know each other, but who didn’t do it. The real perpetrator was a hacker who used the IP of others to post the threats to show that anyone can be convicted in Japan. Former prosecutors are on record that they’ve physically abused suspects, that they and others have used threats, and that they’ve had suspects sign confessions that they KNEW contradicted everything a suspect had said under interrogation- but that they felt massive pressure to get a confession and so they did.
Until recently interrogations weren’t recorded- now they record part but not all. But... it’s not all the polices fault. In Japan they can’t use the types of surveillance used in other countries. Things like “wire taps” and ease dropping are forbidden to police because of abuses of power of historical police and government forces in Japan.
As you say- police may keep a person in relentless interrogation for 5 days straight, not even asking questions- just telling them to confess, that they are guilty, that if they confess they’ll get a lighter sentence, to think about their families- which is another major difference in japan- family and reputation are still very important social components in the lives of most people.
