I have no idea what was the actual thought process behind this billboard since it almost immediately lead to a fairly impressive blame game and was taken down shortly after.

that said, from the admittedly little I know about the topic, a lot of the issue is based around the fact that Canada's economy is not in a good place right now. The oil industry is at a standstill (people are being forced to abandon their jobs altogether and many are losing everything), China hates us because of the stupid Huawei executive, the housing markets are in trouble in a lot of places, etc etc etc.
.
We're not in a good position to be accepting immigrants (who are willing to work for lower pay which does become an issue) when a lot of people can't even find jobs right now.
.
We also had a kerfuffle at the US border with people trying to get across it to avoid being sent back to their country of origin
.
And with all this going on there have been talks of letting an additional 20,000 people a year in
Homelessness is on the rise in a lot of places (shelters are overflowing) and if you're homeless in Canada you have only a few dozen cities you can live in all-year on the street without facing the infamous Canadian winters.
.
Those are the most common explanations I've encountered
.
I think it's supposed to be a "how can we take cAre of these new people when we can't even currently look after our own?" Mentality
Oh don't get confused now - Canada by and large DOESN'T have this mentality. And generally anything that suggests anything anti-immigration gets more or less labelled a hate crime by the court of public opinion.
.
Honestly I feel bad for people on both sides of the equation and short of fixing the countries people are running FROM (which will never happen), it seems like there will never be a solution
