should answer and say "sorry kid, your parents don't want you to have it, they're too cheap"

On the one hand- answering the call- then being all cheerful to the kid and telling him his IPad is waiting- that it’s ready and you put cool games on it- and you want to give it to him, but his dad just needs to come pick it up- would be darkly satisfying- and just keep saying, no matter what the dad says- “I want you to have it, I don’t know why your dad isn’t letting you. It’s right here. <dads name> your sons I pad is waiting- you just have to pick it up. Why can’t he have it?l

On the other though.... it isn’t the kids fault their parent is a jerk or just clueless. So involving the kid or doing anything that would get the kids hopes up or make them sad isn’t worth it I think. Either way- however crappy their parents are they are stuck with them- so no need to cause more problems in that house. I’d just keep it between me and the dad- chastise the dad for dragging his kid into it and ask if what he really wants of for a stranger to tell his child that HE is the reason they can’t have the iPad- or if he’d rather keep me out of it with his kid and be able to make up whatever he wants.
