I think the missing word is “needlessly.” Some Rhône’s suffering is just part of a process, of it has value in it. We use society and technology to find ways to avoid suffering inherent to nature- we haven’t changed the laws of physics, we’ve just found a way around so long as we have the resources to enact it. Wanting someone else to suffer just for the sake of suffering or so you aren’t alone in having suffered is sadistic. Putting someone through something that will benefit them but involves suffering isn’t. If we took the suffering out of training soldiers or athletes- if we could take the suffering out of romance when you’re young- is that helping, when you get to the “big show” and never developed ways to deal with the suffering that you WILL face there- when you are robbed of that thing that lets you avoid suffering- you have no healthy coping mechanisms? No. So it’s an important distinction- at least until we can create a world fee of all suffering.
