ok, but didn't they have a stunt double for him? I mean he was the TALLEST among the cast, now, playing a dwarf, against stuntmen as orcs would show, a full size man, fighting full sized orcs.
John Rhys-Davis wasn't the tallest actor on the set. Iirc he was the second tallest of the main members (the fellowship and other noteworthy recurring characters - saruman/christopher Lee being somewhat taller), but there were several members of the background cast that were taller than him, including the actor that played Lurtz, the uruk-hai leader.

That said, they weren't SIGNIFICANTLY taller than him. Certainly not enough to make him seem dwarf sized.

They had stunt doubles for some of the wide-angle shots, but they also used a large variety of tricks to make the actors seem shorter.

For for close-ups there's several scenes where you can see it's John Rhys-Davis. Most likely he's on his knees on these occasions when he's actually hitting these guys
