You’ll find many of these “apple quotes $X,000 and independent does same repair for way less” stories. Here’s the thing though- most aren’t true. What I mean is- Apple usually did quote $1200 or whatever and a ship fixed the device for $100- but they didn’t do the same repair. Confused? Ok. So- You have a flat tire. You go to a repair shop and get a quote for $900. You go down the street- a guy says give him $20- you do, an hour or less later- you’re on your way with no more flat tire. The second shop fixed the flat- but they didn’t do the same repair.

The $900 was for 2 tires. Why? Because if you replace 1 tire and your tires aren’t basically brand new- you need to replace the pair to do the job right. Why replace it at all? A skilled tech looked at it- a nail was too close to the sidewall and they determined it was too unsafe to try and fix the existing tire. If it fails you’re mad or maybe sue them, if it fails bad you die. Either way that’s bad for their reputation and business. Then after they take the tires off they balance the wheels- so the car rides right and doesn’t cause damage to suspension etc. maybe am alignment too. So the job is done right. Total- $900.

The other shop pulled your tire off, stick a $0.50 patch on it, threw it back on, filled it with air and MAYBE balanced it. Both methods get the result you want- at least at the moment. The thing works again. But they aren’t the same repair. Not by far. If your bathtub is leaking- it could be a few hundred to re seal it. A few thousand to remove it and make sure the wood behind it isn’t festering mold or water damage- or some guy will shoot some caulk over your grout for $50-100. If he dies it right and there ISNT water behind the tub- meh. You saved a bunch of money and it’ll probably last quite a few years. No harm- all win. But try to get a reputable licensed contractor to come do something like that. 99.9% of the time- unless and maybe even if you’re personal friends- they won’t. They have a reputation and all the liability the second they touch it.

Craigslist is full of guys who will repair your iPhone or laptop or whatever for $100 or less. Some are REALLY good, most are not but it isn’t rocket science if everything goes right. So maybe 99 people have good stories of using that method or doing it themselves- but if you look you’ll see when it goes bad- it goes BAD, and most of the time if they screw up- good luck getting it taken care of or even suing some random guy.

I’ve never taken a device to Apple to be fixed- I’ve never had one break under warranty and I’m not paying them to do it right because I don’t need it done right. But that’s important- that you understand what you are doing, the risks you’re taking or tradeoffs you’re making, and accept them.

Apple devices have little moisture sensitive chemical strips inside. If you carry your phone close to your body for any length of time- sweat probably has tripped them. Live in high humidity? Ever take your phone in the shower? It doesn’t matter that water never touched the device- water in the AIR will trigger these strips. If those strips are triggered- they won’t touch it OR they’ll require that whole board be replaced.

Think about it- IF there is ANYTHING actually damaged on that board (and who’s word are they supposed to take that it totally works fine and never got wet..?) if they fix your $10 cable and don’t touch the board- what happens when they power it up if moisture shorts the board and destroys your device? “Sorry. Your laptop fired itself. It’s no good. But you still owe $100...” now you’re pissed- you have no reason to pay (to etc your more broken lap top back?) they’re out the money and likely a customer- you’re going to bad mouth them everywhere- and from your perspective... except that cable it worked fine and Apple ruined your laptop. It needed a $10 part and now it is completely destroyed.

And then come the same folks jumping on this bandwagon “RIP OFF ARTISTS!!” And they say “they did it on purpose. That way they get your money AND they force you to buy a new laptop!” But why? Why would they intentionally piss off a customer and then expect them to buy another product? If they can’t fix this one- what confidence do you have when you buy a new $3000 lap top that when it breaks you won’t have a paper weight? That model seems kinda dumb right? Like- why offer repairs at all if you’re going to purposely either charge so much it offends people or try to force them to buy a new unit?

Mattel won’t repair your hot wheels car or your Barbie because it’s cheaper to buy a new one. So if it’s the cost of a new laptop to fix an old laptop- why not just leave that to private vendors to fix your old crap and tell people you don’t support old crap? Ford doesn’t have parts for many 90’s or earlier cars. Even early 2000’s cars- Mazda, Nissan- they don’t even keep the data they have for their early 80’s cars and their technicians aren’t trained on older cars when they start- just the new stuff. Dealers don’t expect most people to bring their old cars in. They know their business. They mostly work on current cars and let independents do the old crap.

Apple offers repairs as a service- the same way that BMW will make you brand new parts for your old BMW that they don’t carry anymore. Custom made just for you- with a price tag attached because they don’t do it as their bread and butter- they do it because for customers who want to keep their older stuff running they will help- but it’s extra work for them to support. So you pay a premium.

Apple won’t touch your computer if there is anything suspicious or wrong unless you let them fix that too. The repair shops down the street are often less conservative. You CAN replace just the power socket on your phone and not the entire board. It’s not designed so you can- but you can desolder and solder a new one to the old board.

But... how do we know that the kid at the Apple store downtown and the woman at the Apple store uptown have the same talent and one won’t do a worse job? How do we know they won’t have off days? What happens if one of those employees burns themselves? What about in 20 years if Apple faces some class action suit from people effected somehow by soldering all day? What about needing to train their workers to solder boards as opposed to replacing them? It’s more complex than it looks and many times- smaller companies face less liability than giant ones as odd as that seems.

Courts and the public tend to love to kick big companies. What’s more- when joes electronics gets sued the judgment is seldom many millions of dollars. We see Apple and think “deep pockets.” A judge and jury see joe and think “this customer was wronged and deserves pay back- but Joe is like me- a Norman person. I don’t want to make his kids homeless and ruin him completely...” Juries don’t tend to award millions when Jeff sues Joe.

Is Apple evil? Sinister? Eye of the beholder. I’m not fond of many of their practices or philosophies or products. They DO actively try to monopolize and control their hardware and software and basically everything hey touch. They try to skirt the law and find ways to prevent owners or other businesses from being able to do ANYTHING outside of their view or catalog. That’s bad. But- hate Apple all you like- call them out where they do wrong- but just because Stalin killed millions- don’t try and pin him for kidnapping the Lindbergh Baby.

Call a criminal a criminal- but only for the crimes they actually do. There’s plenty of legitimate gripes about Apple- and their iron fist is a worthy topic of debate- So there’s no need to sensationalize it. Compare.. pun intended- apples to apples and a lot of the times you’ll see that what Apple quoted a person for on a repair and what a repair shop did... not the same thing.

My husband is a computer technician and he gets so many apple users asking if he can fix their computer. He can fix the majority of them but when he finds one he can't it means it is unfixable. So he offers to build them a damn good PC for 600 that is worth 1000. He is able to get deals on parts and the PC he makes ends up so much better than the apple they had. Never once did he have to fix a PC he built due to something he did. They only break down due to something the owner did. Like one woman couldn't figure out why her PC was so slow. Turned out he teen grandson downloaded a shit load of porn lol. My husband had to save all the files onto a USB and hand it over to her. Lol he said that was the first time I ever had to show a grandma porn. Lmao

My sister once paid 150€ + pieces to have a professional take the hard drive from her dead Apple laptop and put it in a box to convert it into an external hard drive, an operation i had just made on my -PC- laptop two weeks prior in about 30 min... I mean, if people are willing to pay, why not profit from it. This isn't the way I would live my life, but it's logical in a way.
