This is actually extremely common. It's called corporate espionage, and companies will pay a lot of money to people to obtain their competitor's secrets.
Which is why Pepsi reported it I imagine. The benefits would have been minor, but punishing someone and potentially establishing karma with coca cola could help both companies discourage and avoid espionage in the future
