Why the spinal cord?

Our spinal cord is a part of our Central Nervous System, so the brain couldn't do anything without the spine and the spine couldn't do anything without the brain.

It doesn't just communicate with the rest of the body, it also affects behaviour, and manages survival instincts and all that jazz.

Well, our spinal cord is kind of like another part of our brain. Like dragonbaby said, it does all those things. It's needed for our brain to function and without the brain we're nothing.
