I am literally just relieved if I can get the thing on the ground without it leaving one of it's tiny lifeline threads on the papertowel/glass/etc and coming flying back at me when I try and walk away
Congratulations you just killed it. It'll just take longer for it to die. House spiders have developed to live inside. It'd be a bit like dropping you in the middle of the Sahara. Unless you already live there you're probably going to die.
Y'all must have some really weird spiders where you live.
.
As long as you don't put it right out in the open, or in the middle of a bunch of ants or a giant puddle, or when it's freezing, there's 0 reason pretty much any spider I've ever encountered shouldn't be able to survive.
.
Also - delaying the death of the spider is kind of the entire point o.O
