We used them in clothing instead of food. <_< Yes, t'was a mistake; a very Brit mistake. I don't think "we" is the correct word; as white people were screwed over by that as well.

I'd just like to point out that Sweden uses spices a lot. Cinnamon on banana bacon really covers the pickled herring flavour.
