It’s still an ignorant statement on Clarkson’s part- there have been accredited and recognized scientists- some of the worlds leading minds- speaking on climate change for decades plus- so her “learning science” isn’t something that by default would help the situation or her ability to champion it- especially when that little girl has received more attention for her speaking on climate change in the last couple of years than any one of those scientists who’s named elude headlines and social media feeds.
More to the point- out current understanding of human ability to influence climate change is such that we don’t need a brilliant scientist to save the day as much as we need behavioral changes with regular people.
In fact- when it comes to real world impact on climate change- getting an MBA would give her more ability to impact climate change directly than getting a PHD. That said- to do work on technology concerning climate change- being an engineer might be more practical in creating efficient technology and practices.
So all things considered- Clarkson lacks the knowledge or credentials on the subject to even tell her off properly- if I had to choose one or the other to listen to based on merit of argument against known fact- I’d choose the one who doesn’t say “shut up and learn the science!” As the more intelligent position. But not viewed in a vacuum where I can only choose one or the other as a source of information...
Perhaps I’d be inclined to listen to the worlds leading scientists... the people who the child is more or less saying the same things as- and perhaps be wise enough to know that when it comes to research and hard data or studies- I’ve done about as much actual science as the kid or Clarkson has on climate change. That is to say- I’m unqualified to make a statement of scientific fact. Luckily- we have scientists who specialize in that very thing. Scientists who are by large consensus concerned and recommending changes to our world and behaviors to avoid catastrophe.
Ah yes, tell a girl to shut up, that always works 'cause it hits them on a visceral level. Just like how giving an angry woman a knife will cause them to make you a sandwich. Why doesn't he tell her to smile more while he's at it?
