Anish Kapoors studio has the exclusive rights to a certain formulation of vanta black AND in the segments of art and design. I’m sure one could quibble over wether automobiles count as art or design- but my guess is that “automotive” is considered a separate sector. Defense and other segments have been allowed vantablack for some time already (its intended purpose,) and the company that makes vantablack has been looking for other licensing opportunities.
So it is more a guess than anything- but I presume the contract with kapoor doesn’t cover vehicles, or that kapoor is ok with the use. Vantablack is an extremely difficult and prohibitive material to work with- and this is a one off made by BMW- those familiar with the factory BMW flat black waiver, or who have owned flat black (actually painted and not rattle can) cars- well... speaking from experience... flat black is VERY hard to live with and take care of- but vantablack black would literally be damaged just by using the car at all. That last part is just as a fun fact.
