All depends what you get a degree in. For example, a Law or Commerce degree can be used just about anywhere. Gender Studies? Not so much.

Society swings on a pendulum. When I was in high school in the 2000s, it was all about "go to college. Without a college degree you are nothing". Nowadays in the poor schools I teach in, we encourage students to consider trades like electrician, plumber, IT specialist, etc., as college degrees aren't worth so much anymore.

In fact, my brother in law, ten years older than me, spent 6 years of his life working at Pet Smart trying to get through college, and he just couldn't do it. After failing a required class for the third time, a friend of his recommended an electrician certification course (or something like that). Cut to three years later, and he installs electrical wires for a living and makes more money than I do. Not everyone needs a college degree.
