I remember several years back many of the news groups etc tried very very very hard to diagnose every Canadian in existence with vitamin d deficiency.

The logic was: canadians have winter. Winter can be dark. Therefore: canadians are depressed and lack vitamin d.

There were conflicting debates about how to solve the problem, but they were absolutely certain that taking somewhere between 500 - 8000mg of vitamin d supplements a day was the only way we could avoid everyone killing themselves going forward.

Wasn't til several years went by that they finally realized (and announced) that no, no, no it doesn't work like that. And most canadians are, in fact, perfectly sufficient in vitamin D, even through the winter
