Misogynists, pedophiles, rapists, drug addicts, and alcoholics? I’m glad the Hollywood sign is in the picture or else we might think you were talking about the government. Or... corporate America. Or... suburban America. Or... small town America. Now- while being a pedophile or a rapist or a misogynist isn’t something to celebrate- if the worlds most knowledgeable scientist was any one of those things- there’s no reason for me not to listen if they tell me my new aircraft design is flawed. Their moral or personal failings speak on their character- but not against their expertise- unless the subject is one their specific failing makes them biased on.

Likewise- I wouldn’t generally listen to someone who was drunk or stoned out of their mind, or coming down hard/in withdrawal. But- if they were level at that moment- there’s no reason that the knowledge or even opinion of someone with substance abuse problems couldn’t be valid on a particular subject?

Celebrities are talking heads or at best artists. SOME are very intelligent and have degrees or even backgrounds in other fields relating to things they may advocate. The reason to not listen to a particular celebrity has less to do with their morality and more to do with their credentials etc. if a crack addict tells you you shouldnt do crack- it ruined their life- are you gonna eye roll and say “what do YOU know?” If RDJ talks about compassion for people or the things he learned struggling with his problems- we dismiss him because he’s “Hollywood” and an ex substance abuser?

Most of the guys who wrote the fundamental laws of our country had what we would consider substance abuse problems, misogyny- the founding fathers owned slaves and most weren’t very keen on women’s rights- or even the idea women had standing to have them as humans the same as men. Bad people can have good ideas. Don’t be daft. Don’t consume information. Absorb, process, apply critically, examine, adjust, repeat. The source of knowledge isn’t as important as the quality.
