Don't knock or speak for "Hoods in da Woods". Them boys get to give back and have to be trustee status, so no violent nor felons, at least in Texas (as far as I recall up to 2008).

I’m going to start with the low hanging fruit here. Why are we talking about pay? Do prisoner volunteers get paid less than other volunteers? A volunteer is by definition- a volunteer. If you’ve never spent time in prison- it isn’t the most stimulating of environments most of the time. Prison volunteers often get special privileges, possibly reduced sentences or consideration on parole, and of course.... it gets you a change of scenery that while not exactly a day of sun bathing- is still a day that is different than the routine of prison life.

Now that we’ve established there is no reason to talk about lying unpaid volunteers wether they are prisoners or not- let’s address the second part. It sucks they can’t be fire fighters. It especially sucks when we talk about juvenile offenders who often couldn’t really understand the consequences of their actions let alone comprehend what life was like or how their choices would limit them for possibly the rest of theirs.

There is room to discuss how even after sentences are served and restitution paid, society continues to penalize ex cons. We can and should discuss and study and evaluate where and how we can take prudent measures for society while also being as humane as possible and helping ex cons reintegrate and not re lapse. But the fact ex felons can’t be fire fighters also has nothing to do with volunteering to help in an emergency. I mean- you can volunteer to help all sorts of agencies which you can never are likely will never be able to be employed by. For many people knowing this- volunteering is as close as they can get so they do it to be close to the thing.
