Never forget the accusations of xenophobia that lambasted Trump by Nancy Pelosi and other top democrats after announcing the restrictions of travel between the US and China. The political game is destroying this nation.

Because the "travel restriction" was fake.
1).Tens of thousands came from China anyway, with no effort made to quarantine.
2). Only China was targeted, despite the very public outbreaks in Europe. Europe is also where the strain that hit the east coast came from.
It's clear that the intention was never to slow the spread. Trump only wanted political theater, to look like he was tough on China without spooking the market. The criticizism of Trump was valid.
I'mma have to disagree with #2. The travel ban between China and US began Feb 1st. The hardest hit region of Europe (Italy) first began signaling issue with the disease in mid Feb. Two weeks later travel between the EU and US are restricted.
You have to keep in mind that throughout January and early February the WHO was still publicly debating whether this disease was transferable person to person. They only came to a conclusion on that after the infections started on the West coast of the US, Italy, and Spain respectively.
That all being said at the start of all this it was entirely unknown to much of the world to what extent the spread would take. For all we knew it was another SARS (i.e. relegated to China). The intial recall of US citizens from China could be seen as permissible to not quarantine as we had no clue what was happening nor the amojnt the virus had spread in China but the lack of restrictions and quarantine orders that followed the EU ban are indefensible as we knew the virus was person to person transferrable and was prevalent in the West coast of the US.
Unfortunately It seems life as we knew it will not be "normal" any time soon. If ever again .. I miss concerts and festivals big parties and packed bar music shows. I'm not going to anywhere full of people. Events that as I look back on, the 100+ people I needed to squeeze through at a festival to get a $10 beer than squeeze back through... That seems like a different world to me now. Call me what you want but damn if I'm putting myself in that situation anytime soon.
Meanwhile, De Blasio, Pelosi and all the rest were out in public, without masks, telling us to go about our normal routines, because there was nothing to be afraid of.
