There are many wonderful things about Europe. In general it’s a swell place. As an American, and speaking for a crap ton of Americans- I do not now, nor have I ever wished we were more like Europe. We have fought several major wars to make sure that we weren’t more like Europe. Perhaps there are some things about Europe which would be nice if we had them. I’d certainly like an Autobahn. But- the United States is the United States. Geographically, politically, demographically, we aren’t Europe. Europe has its own problems I don’t want. To each their own.

I think one can only form a valid opinion on this if one has lived (and worked!) in both unions for a considerable number of years.

Perhaps so. A place one would enjoy a visit to is not always a place one would enjoy to live. That said, we all have our “normal” and we are either (more commonly) bias towards what is our normal; or are bias to anything different than our “normal” depending on our feelings towards that. I suppose it’s a bit like saying: “one cannot day they prefer to give penetrative intercourse to taking it, if one hasn’t given being penetrated a solid and lengthy trial.” Well.... we could say that is true- but sometimes we know what we like and what we don’t. Trying new things seldom hurts*, and is the only REAL way to know... but...

As an American who's traveled and lived abroad (although for several months and not years as you specified) I much prefer the US. It's personal bias for sure. I'm more comfortable with the safety and values of America over European nations.

We do have to ask what is “tried and gave time and liked...” and what is “grew accustomed to”? Human beings can get used to almost anything. It’s part of our survival and coping mechanisms. Even a person who has suffered trauma or abuse an get used to it- seek it out, as it is what they know and is comfortable to them. And of course- if we make the choice to move somewhere- we are inherently biased to declare it a good idea to self validate our choices.

There are countries where clean running water is a luxury and people who could leave choose to live there. It is their home. If you bad mouth it or call it a sh$t hole they’ll likely get offended. People live or have lived in despotic genocidal regimes from the USSR to other places and loved their homes- considered it better than anywhere else. It’s a crap shoot. Different strokes for different folks.

Personally, I liked many aspects of Switzerland as a whole. I liked the closer nit communities and the more day to day lifestyle that people lived, atleast in the region I was in. Now the things I didn't like were the, again imo, overbearing nature of the laws that existed. Noise ordnances and traffic laws being the biggest issues my coworkers and I ran into.
