Expecting a hostile military force to treat you any better than whatever you had governing you to begin with seems like a fool's desire.

Would a hostile military force still be hostile if they encountered zero resistance? What the Hell would be the point of the hostility? You could say they would just want to exterminate us, but an alien civilization that would look at us like bugs could achieve that through much easier means than a hostile military takeover.
