A group of butterflies is called a "swarm," "rabble," "kaleidoscope," or "flutter of butterflies."

Wow! Of all the collective nouns for groups of creatures, I don't think I've ever heard a more perfect and poetic one, than a kaleidoscope of butterflies. Thanks for that.
