Ok Dr. Peterson. (I'm joking of course, but your comment is pretty in line with his teachings)
But what if you find evidence that your values are bad or harmful to yourself or others?
I'm not saying live without values altogether, but maybe don't "stick to it" so fervently to the point of denying evidence or critique of said values.
@bruh good point, I was gonna mention that as well, I just didn't want to start a whole philosophical thread here lol. By stating explicitly what should be among those values, you're preventing the person from fully creating their own values. However by telling them to create values of their own and stick to them, you're risking they'll create bad values for themselves. But since @garlog mentioned that those values should lead a person to virtue, one can imagine that learning from mistakes would be among them. Well, someone with my values and my definition of virtue would anyway, I don't know what a person with a different definition of virtue would say to that.
I like the way this comment string went.
I want to clarify that by "stick to it", I meant that you need to actually follow the guide and keep following the guide, its not enough to just think about it or talk about it. Its also okay to slip up from time to time, its more important to make following the guide a habit than to attempt to stick to it absolutely.
Also the guide definitely should change over time as you learn new things from new experiences, including learning about the faults in the guide as it currently exists, which it will inevitably have because no such guide is perfect.
