That syrup was worth around $30 million US and was about 1/3 of their total reserve. Maple syrup is such a big part of Canadian exports that the government stockpiles it against crop failures or demand spikes. Since no one was checking regularly if the barrels in the warehouse were still full or not it's uncertain when the theft took place or how long it took.

If it were americas stockpile of maple syrup it would have been in china, because americans are just too stupid to make their own products
