This kind of thing, specifically this way of something happening, seems to me like a really good thing because it gives that hard slap to the inside of the brain that maybe something doesn’t fit your internal thoughts in a way that you can’t ignore rather than something they can just rationalise away as still fitting their thought patterns. At least in this case I can definitely see the people doing this trying to rationalise it as “oh well they all just found it funny and voted for her as a joke” but that would require they forget that the original purpose of the “joke” was that she wouldn’t get any votes
This reminds me of a funny event a few years back. A mosque in Sweden wanted to do prayer calls from the minaret and I think most can imagine the response from certain groups. Of course the protesters didn't want to seem racist so it was all about the noise levels and the mosque got permission to call out prayers at like once a week at a max volume of 120db. Since rules can't be specific to one religion, that would be discrimination, this turned out to also include the local churches bells that where a LOT louder and rang a lot more often.
tl;dr A bunch of racists protesting Islam caused a ban on church bells.
