Me too, and it makes sense in that situation given the multiple universes and everything. They didn't just change the race of a long-standing character.
They took a good idea and remixed it. With full respect to the original, and enough differences to keep things fresh. I really need to get ahold of some of the physical comics
I mean, of course they didn't, it wouldn't make sense to make Peter Parker black. You can make Spider-Man black or a different race, but it would still need a driving secret identity. And even if they made Peter Parker black, they would have to explain it somehow or it wouldn't make sense story wise even with a comic book explanation.
.
Almost every superhero has different races, because the people holding the mantle change, and that's alright.
.
All that being said, Miles is my favourite spiderman mostly cause he's still a teenager, while Parker has moved on to bigger things like being an adult and an Avenger. At the back of the mind, I think I would probably always associate Spidey with a teenager.

New character? Miles has been around for 10 years now. Comic book wise, not that old but real world, it's almost a decade old.
