When I was a kid, it was a big family night. We'd get pizza and soda and watch the movie clips. Later, I liked it because I learned about movies that weren't in theaters anywhere near me and I discovered some amazing stuff. Now, with the Internet, I think the idea of serendipitous movie clips are kind of outdated.

I never really cared about seeing people's speeches or who won what.
I'll say this: even though the Oscars, like basically all award ceremonies, are shit, they do sometimes bring exposure to under-appreciated movies. For example, I know a lot of people who had never even heard of Parasite before it won best picture, and they all watched it and really liked it.
I record the opening red carpet walk and awards separately so, in the event Jennifer Lawrence should trip and end up flashing 20+ million viewers and it ACTUALLY makes the edit to broadcast, I have something to meme about with low res screen captures. Just want someone to walk up in pajamas and, when asked "who are you wearing?", answer J.C. Penny. (Ryan Reynolds... I'm counting on you!)
But I'm curious, what is/was the appeal of this?
