It can depend on the field though, here our teachers have told us that it would be useless, as our field (culture) requires very specific experience
(the customers we encounter are generally a specific public, the contacts that need to be taken don't work the same, and if you take retail you'll be considered as only good to work the museum shop, which can be a fun job but if it's not what you want...)
