I think that depends on what's at stake. Buying a car, yes, better check this. But I'd be equally uncomfortable to ask if it's ok to do something like go somewhere with a friend, and to be asked if it is. Sure, inform me, but do whatever the hell you wish, you're an adult (hopefully). And obviously, it also depends on the person. Better just talk with your partner in crime to know where you're at.

Well, if you’re low-budget like we were when we got married, “Can I go out with (x person)” may also mean “Hey, have we got enough in the bank that I can spend ten bucks on food”, so it does depend on circumstances. I remember getting so freaking mad at my spouse because I’d have the budget worked out to where we could buy gas before payday if we needed to and then he’d buy drinks at the 7-11 like three times and if I needed gas the card wouldn’t authorize.
