It does seem unfair or politically bias of the platform at first glance. So we have to ask- how are these situations different? Both are events in reaction to perceived injustice. Both the riots around George Floyd and police murders and the “freedom convoy” have involved destruction of public and private property by self proclaimed participants.
The first difference may be in the donation campaign. Can we find evidence that any of the donations made for the riots were specifically earmarked to fund the rioters? Things like: “let’s bus in rioters!” Or “money for Molotovs to riot with” etc? Or were the released donations for political groups or aid to those effected? The distinction is important since if for fund me directly funded the RIOTS or RIOTERS as opposed to lawful demonstrators- they’d likely face legal ramifications for funding crime directly.
We next have to examine the groups and various policies of go fund me.
It isn’t breaking news that many among the convoy are linked to or are members of or linked to hate groups, or have displayed symbols of hate groups like the swastika.
This raises a few likely causes for the refusal to release funds. The first is that as a policy, go fund me may allow political campaigns but not ones which raise money for known hate groups- one way to identify a hate group is by the presence or absence of swastikas and symbols related directly to racism and racist theology. As many hate groups and extremist groups are also labeled criminal or terrorist organizations, there are potential legal issues with release of money directly to groups which include such people and are acting politically; as well as the previously mentioned terms.
Of course, or should take more than a sentence to explain why we don’t give money to Nazis, neo Nazis, or those with Nazi ideology.
BLM had communist ties yes, but communism is an economic philosophy first and foremost and a social physiology second most. There are not laws protecting class based on their economic beliefs, but races and religions are protected classes in the United States. I shouldn’t have to explain the difference between a race a person is born into and a system of economics but I suspect it may come to it. I also shouldn’t have to explain that while we did war with communists, communism isn’t the prevailing philosophy of a dead enemy or again, intrinsically linked to ideas of racial superiority in the way Nazi beliefs are. So yes, many communists did bad things but communism isn’t inherently evil. Many Nazis did bad things and Nazi beliefs are inherently evil. If they want their money they may want to ditch the Nazis and racists.
Let me make something clear, property damage is always a bad thing, not matter the mob. But the sheer scale of arson, vandalism, looting and property damage BLM accomplished during the 2020 summer of love on a completely different league compared to this convoy. The tone is more than a little different too, my understanding is one statue was vandalized, the the protesters have posted a constant gaurd to cease further vandalism. And the media coverage? Again, I dislike crime, but one is very clearly more destructive and sets a far more violent tone don't you think?
Guest_ can simply himself, what I got out of it is BLM is rooted in Marxist ideology, so they can still receive donations, but a few Nazis and racists are found in a convoy that numbers in the thousands and from all walks of life, can't receive donations, from GoFundMe anyways. Guest_ if I missed the mark I apologize.
Why do that when you can just be disruptive and a detriment to conversation? It's much easier then having to contemplate the reality of your choices.
@jaharien You're awesome, dude.
Tl:dr-
1. The opening statement is bait- it implies money was given from go fund me to directly fund rioters or looters as opposed to money going to lawful activism organizations or private individuals for general or specific support not clearly linked to the funding of rioting.
2. Laws and policies as well as personal or corporate cultures vary- but the presence in the convoy of known hate group members, those with links, and potentially organizational involvement by groups labeled as terrorists or unlawful by the pertinent governments and organizations involved in funds transfers is likely a driving factor in the issue. The display of symbols like swastika openly by the convoy members and their existence as hate symbols being displayed as part of a political movement likely also compound the issue. Legality asides, it is very likely that the company does not want to and has policies in place to allow them not to give money to people associated with Nazis and hate groups.
@jaharien- did BLM do that, or are you conflating random people who started looting with a movement because they look the same or are upset over the same things? Regardless- yes. The scale was larger when we look at the destruction following the riots that erupted after several high profile police executed murders. At any point in history since the formation of the Nazi party and when they began to exercise their power to build the world their ideology called for, any human being willing marching in line with Nazis while Nazis flags were in proud display identified themselves as enemies to anyone who lives freedom or values life. Horrible things have been done under communism, but not all communists are horrible. We can be friends with and exist with Communists and be decent people. There are no Nazis we can coexist with and not label ourselves by the company we keep.
Super short version (don’t take it too literally since the nuance is lost- it’s just broad strokes of the point…)
- this message is distorted and misleading, go fund me did not fund looters and rioters then refuse to fund the convoy.
- the convoy was denied funds because the funding campaign violates the terms of service for go fund me.
- this attempts to frame the issue as covid politics or liberals vs. conservatives etc. the most glaring politics involved are the open participation of Nazis and hate groups extremists in the convoy openly displaying symbols like swastika and hate symbols or ideology.
- I shouldn’t need to explain why any team that has members who are flying swastikas and members who stand along side they and let that be are fundamentally not aligned to American values or freedom.
I don’t really know the software behind this site, but if it isn’t template based and allows any coding, the comments are already character limited, changing the character limit is usually just changing a value.
Preventing multiple replies to one’s comment is more tricky generally- and that’s where you can “break” the character limit by posting as many comments as you like. If you have control of the server you can fiddle with the time allowed between additional posts, but that can cause other problems- for example you can have issues editing or deleting and re writing comments due to time out. It could make replying to multiple deprecate comments on the same post difficult and slow down the ability to have “active” discussions.
It could also change the user experience as while my own comments are often long, there are many examples of discussions, particularly on “hot issues” where people have needed multiple comments to say their piece. Wether that change in dynamics would be good or bad is up for debate or exploration through trial of course.
Another solution that MAY be available would be to remove the ability to reply to one’s own comments. That could mitigate long posts, but so long as a single person replies that would still allow a person to just continue their thoughts after the next reply and could potentially make it difficult to navigate a conversation-
Especially if multiple people were “carrying” long posts forward through each other.
And again- I don’t know the “behind the curtain” to say what can be done or how easily- not do I have data to predict how users would take any changes.
A “soft policy” such as making multi string comments a reportable offense could also be used and avoid the technical issues while allowing flexibility as the community could self Police what they felt was overly long multi post content- but that would then increase the work of administrators who have to review and react to such reports; and it could lead to “punitive reporting” or other biases or perception of bias against certain users or certain view points- which could again cause a detriment to user experience.
These things can be tough for sure, but there’s usually a happy medium somewhere.

Please dumb it down a little for me ;-;
