If you are trying to climb a mountain you can go all out and reach halfway- but if you’re too exhausted to continue and you keep trying you’re less likely to make it and more likely to end up hurt. Sometimes we need to rest, recover, or just pace ourselves. Being exhausted or rushed often leads to mistakes and poorer results than if we took our time. Do your best is a bit contextual- the stakes and urgency of a thing come in to play, but doing your best generally doesn’t mean running yourself ragged for the sake of it. Usually you’re trying to get some desired results. Doing your best means working hard yes, but it also means thinking strategically and finding the optimal path for you to where you want to be. So many of us need encouragement to do our best on “everyday” things- you can’t expect to tackle these things day after day if you’re constantly exhausting yourself the day before. That’s like training for a marathon the night before by running twice the marathon distance.
