This one has made the rounds of news and memedom for some time. For those curious:
Sort of true but highly misleading. The robot in question is EATR- Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot. It was designed to “eat” organisms… plant based one’s. The robot in that picture is not EATR, that robot is a rescue robot used by the Tokyo fire department in Japan. EATR was not designed or intended to “eat” humans or animals at all- and as it was designed really couldn’t practically do so.
EATR’s power plant isn’t even some crazy wild technology- it used a type of steam turbine. The general panic is the equivalent of freaking out that nonpaying passengers could be used to power a steam locomotive. The point of EATR was that it could consume plant matter and self “feed” on plant matter so it didn’t need humans to charge or power it, making long range semi autonomous tasks possible. It also could run on more traditional fuels like kerosene because it was after all- a steam turbine.
