Not just Schizophrenia- but I applaud the inclusion of the fact none the less.
There are layers of meta irony to this meme proclaiming her dying alone after decrying family as a source of suffering.
By most accounts severe onset of symptoms of mental illness began with… the death of her brother. After the death of her father, her family and medical history suggest a sharp and rapid decline. So in that sense- we could point back to her familial bonds in their role for her death alone. Of course in another layer of irony- we could validate the original premise of the meme since we could still attribute her final days and suffering to a lack of family- of which her mental illness somewhat precluded as she was diagnosed with Capgras delusion as well as paranoid schizophrenia. That’s a condition that leaves people believing loved ones and close persons are perfect imposters and not the real person. Ultimately we can probably attribute her fate to mental illness, un ironic and tragic.
As two other fine points to the original meme:
1. Calling her a “feminist” is a tad bit misleading and inaccurate as her philosophies were aligned more to second wave feminism or radical feminism. The wording conflates the ideologies because they share some elements. It would be a bit like saying “Republican Coup of the USA thwarted in January 6th…” were the majority of rioters and instigators republicans or right wing? Yes. But the former implies the ENTIRE Republican Party and its philosophies support extremist right wing philosophy when radical or “alt” right philosophy is not a foundation of Republican philosophy just because some elements overlap.
2. The cause of death is listed as starvation. This was never conclusively proven and is ambiguous. Her religious beliefs would not allow for an autopsy and the family states her death was “natural causes.” Experts have given their opinions based on the evidence and it seems likely she was starved or starving, and that starvation may have been the cause of death or at least a contributing factor- but officially starvation is not her cause of death. Beyond that we have what third parties speculate and the official stammer of the family. Without a proper post mortem there isn’t grounds to declare starvation the cause of death and all evidence is circumstantial.
“Starvation” was just speculation. Official cause of death is ambiguous as Orthodox faith prohibits autopsy and without any indication of “foul play” there isn’t strong standing to attempt to force the issue.
You can find a New Yorker article archived on their site from April 15th 2013 which puts forth the speculation. I am not clear on other specific sources. But to your point it is not accurate to declare starvation as the cause of death definitively or as anything but speculation or rumor.
