I believe that is called a “commune” or similar names and you don’t actually have to be rich to achieve it- to the contrary historically people have often been quite poor or even destitute and created communes. A co-op is a similar concept and there are several similar concepts which often have more negative perceptions like a cult. One way to achieve this dream without being rich and without living in extreme sacrifice might be that if one’s friends were actually interested in sharing that living situation and could be relied upon and trusted in that scenario- the group of friends might all pitch in money and pay for the dream together or pool money to invest and grow the mutual savings to afford to do this eventually.
A similar but nuanced concept is a “community,” traditionally that is where when one moves to an area they make friends with their neighbors and tend communal spaces and raise children as playmates and help each other etc. the end result is that one ends up living with their friends etc- but it is slightly different than moving in next to existing or specific friends, and not all neighbors will be people we are able to be friends with.
But overall a swell idea and I wish them luck in achieving their goals.
If I get rich, I will buy the whole neighborhood so I can make all the empty houses into serial killer torture dungeons and everyone will leave me TF alone. I've heard repeatedly that serial killers make very quiet neighbors who keep to themselves.
