When you look at how they're generally perceived, they're not really helping that cause.

That's exactly what made me a dog person. It's like why I generally like the english better than the french. Try and speak french with a french, and they're likely to go like "what absurd gibberish is this? Don't you know the least? Föck yü!" - Be able to speak fifteen words in english, barely pronouncing it correctly, and most of them will go "Brilliant, mate, where did you learn that? So what's it with those *slur for french people*, anyway?"
.
Seriously, I found the level of complex communication you potentially can have with a dog can be totally mindblowing. Some of them are so eagerly trying to understand us bipeds, it's amazing. At the end of the day it's mostly for the treats but still impressing. Having grown up in a rural area, I've also seen dogs finding ways to communicate with other species as well. Dogs generally like humans, cats barely tolerate us.
