Racism is hating/disliking someone for their race. what is described here is stereotyping. (I.e. "that guy likes watermelon cuz he is black" = stereotyping. "i hate that guy cuz he's black" =racism)
I see stereotyping as a broad term and racism as a specific form of stereotype. For instance, "that guy is inferior cuz he's black" is a clear stereotype. But since it is a kind of stereotype which is based on race, it is also overt racism. (saying someone is inferior based on his/her sexual orientation is also to create a stereotype, but this is homophobia, another form of stereotyping.) I also think that when someone says "I hate that guy cuz he's black," the implication is that he/she is really saying "I hate this guy cuz he's black, which makes him inferior." So again, this is a stereotype based on racism.
just to clear it up, here are the actual definitions of both terms- devoid of silly opinions or prejudice-
racism-
ˈreɪsɪz(ə)m/Submit
noun
1.
the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
stereotype-
ˈstɛrɪə(ʊ)tʌɪp,ˈstɪərɪə(ʊ)-/Submit
noun
1.
a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
racism is not disliking someone for their race.
if you do that, then your're elitist. Someone is better than you because you don't own a Range Rover or a Mercedez ? that's stupid (yes, i think the same as the guest up there )
if she had been serious when she said it then obviously that would be a stupid thing to say. As it happened it was a joke referencing the fact that some people judge her based on her sexuality. In context, it was actually pretty funny because it was not what anyone expected her to say.
yeah I hate that stupid definition that some black people constantly spout about how black people can't be racist because they don't have power. That is fucking ridiculous. No wonder there are still people who hate black people.
Woah guest I agree with your comment except for the last part, even if 98% of black people were racist, things like that shouldn't be said... I do agree though, it's totally fucking ridiculous.
Why is it when white people say their better, its racist. But when black people say their better, its ok? I don't agree with racism, but I defiantly don't agree with that.
When the oppressed generalize their oppressors, it helps them stay safe and alive. When oppressors generalize the oppressed it can lead to violence and hate.
Basically, when an oppressed group, in this instance a racial minority, runs on the idea that it is very likely that a white person they encounter is racist, that caution may very well protect them, even keep them alive or unharmed until that person can determine their situation. However when the privileged majority assumes stereotypes about minorities it perpetuates the cycle of oppression because the privilege of that majority is essential in that cycle. When it hurts your feelings to be called you racist, 1) consider that maybe you do in fact inadvertently perpetuate racist behavior, and 2) consider that in their experiences with systematic racism, it may be that a non-prejudiced or non-racist person is the exception, not the rule...
well, did you write the dictionary? pretty sure they've done more reserach and are informed, not opinionated ,unlike you. Doesn't matter if you think it's different, that's the definition. Deal with it-just coz it's you opinion doesn't make it true.
