Lollipop stick hole

To make people ask questions.Works,doesn't it?

I think the hole is there because a small bit of the actual lolly goes through the hole (as the stick protrudes into the lolly) and in a way, holds it in place.
Do you get what I mean...?

Isn't it to allow you to breathe in case you swallow the stick and it get stuck in your throat?

I made up this thing as a child saying that it was a whistle, well I think I made it up unless someone told me. Could this be true???
