My elementary school installed gates a couple years after I left, and I'd like to think it's because I walked home in the middle of the day when I was in 4th grade.
I found out that my elementary school started trimming back the bushes away from the gate/fence. Apparently, seeing myself and roughly a dozen other small children chewing on a flowering bush made a lasting impression.
