Originally certain fried foods became predominate because they kept better after it had been cooked and you could eat them cold without losing alot of the taste. Fried chicken is a great example, it was cheap and you could cook it the night before and still eat it the next day for lunch without refrigeration. Of course that doesn't mean it's anymore healthier for you. This became a prominent after slavery was outlawed. It's also where we get the stereotype of black people liking fried chicken. Most of the newly freed slaves were poor so they typically ate food they could buy cheap and keep longer. This is also the reason there are more fried foods in the south, because, you guessed it the south is where they were freed.
I just found a hotdog place by me that sells hotdogs with crazy toppings...including a hot dog topped with macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, and bacon!
I even live in the South where all the good deep fried food is
Not all of our food is fatty and deep fried.
