Something like this happened to me once. I didn't get threatened with suspension or anything like that, but I got in trouble because everyone was supposed to color the earth brown continents with blue water and I colored my with green continents instead.
I'm surprised that the majority of commenters seem to be on the side of the teacher and principal. Sure the child was slightly quick to call the activity a waste of time but if one of my teachers had us COLORING in the 4th grade and then told us we had to color a specific color, I'd have been "like no that's stupid. Let me fucking color." Of course I would not have said that, or even had been able to use that vocabulary at that age, but I would have thought it was stupid, absolutely. And of course the mother has every right to be upset, they pulled her out of work and pulled her daughter out of class just because she had an attitude about COLORING. It's COLORING. Who cares? I would be so mad. I fucking love coloring.

Yeah, bitch. *high five*
Coloring is the best way to let yourself out. And unless the teacher really is so old, she was born in the Dino ages, she can't say what color dinosaurs are, and there's no reason for her to be so pissy over it.
Where does it say she is in the 4th grade? I'm not necessarily on the "side of the teacher and principal", just that the little kid didn't have to be such a bitch. Her lack of respect is what she should get punished for, not that she tried to color a dinosaur blue.
Maybe if you read above, you'd see that me and another person validated that she's 10 years old and in the fourth grade.
Secondly, no one specifically referenced you. If you're insultsd or something, it's not like we were trying to.
Sorry, I missed that comment before you brought it to my attention. I do not feel insulted, and I do not believe you referenced me. I was merely alluding to the fact that it is not a dichotomy. Everyone involved could have handled the situation better.
Really surprised by the amount of people siding with the teacher. Dude, that is how people get brainwashed and do violent things for the sake of a belief. Because they don't question things. They just blindly following it, without knowing why should they, simply because an authority said so.
Kids need to learn to stop being a rebel just for the sake of being a rebel, though. Sure, nobody knows what color the dinosaurs were, and the assignment is pointless (coloring them whatever color he/she wants does not make it any less boring and pointless), but completing tasks in the manner one is instructed is an integral part of how we learn information and function as a society. There is a time, place, and method of discussing things, and this kid missed on all three counts. If this kid had been even moderately respectful, then they may have reached a compromise.
What compromise? You just said she should have followed instructions. That would have resulted in a green or brown dinosaur. Where is there room for compromise?
The kid mentioned to the other girl that nobody knows what color dinosaurs actually were. Instead of immediately being snide with the teacher, she could have mentioned that. The teacher may have thought about it for a second and been like "good point, you can color it blue" or, more likely "good point, but just color it green for now, and maybe next time we can try other colors".
Good call, actually. For some reason I'd assumed that was said to the teacher.
Funny how that actually reinforces my low opinion of the mother and daughter.
The mom strikes me as the type that is like "screw the government and society", criticizing anything that is of no direct utility to her selfishness, but she will certainly accept any part of it that benefits and supports her.
:-)
(doo-doo doo doo doo doo doo)
Be complacent
Don't worry
Be complacent now
The author doesn't even know how to emulate the speaking patterns of children.
