I don't think basic safety equipment would help. You'd need at least one of those full-face hardened wire mesh airsoft masks and a helmet.

This is what I reference when people tell me things like "Watermelons have the same consistency as a human head." If that were true, her head should have taken just as much damage as the watermelon. But I've looked up this story, and she walked away a bit bruised up, but otherwise no worse for the wear. I'd like the science side of FunSub to explain what people mean when they say a watermelon has the same consistency as a human head (it's often said when testing ballistics - I've heard it on Mythbusters a number of times).
