I like it! Sure the glitter is a little unnecessary but I can see why they added that. The clothing and accessories are more complex, and I mean details are always interesting. I am quite fond of how the shading have been improved you can see how much time the artist spent on it.
Overall a pretty nice redesign for merchandise.
I have done some research, and I cannot identify the person responsible. However, I CAN tell the reason! Ariel's dress is actually an amalgamation of the dresses of previous princesses! The top and puffy sleeves are Snow White, the long sleeves are Aurora, the skirt is Cinderella, and finally, the atrocity of a color is also from Cinderella, but it comes from the dress the mice made her at the beginning of the movie.
Mulan didn't care about gender stereotypes. She went into war so her aging father wouldn't have to go. Not because of some need to prove girls could do what guys could. She didn't mind wearing dresses, she just didn't feel like getting dolled up to be a wife to some stranger was for her.
So the dress is totally her, she wore it at the beginning AND end of the film HAPPILY. What isn't her is the pink dress they have her wear in the parks because that's the scene where she's very uncomfortable.
And it's not called a Chinese kimono, that's Japanese. It looks more like a Han fu or something I can't remember the name of.
Exactly! Just because a girl I wearing jeans or dresses it doesn't change her as a person. Mulan is a wonderful character, not because she pretended to be a boy to show girls that they can do stuff but rather because she showed people that even if people are against you, if you want to protect something or change something you sometimes have go to extreme lengths. Like dressing faking your identity entirely. Mulan is strong enough to do that whether she is wearing a fancy kimono or armor.
