A buisness must protect it's image. If you look like a pin cushion or graffiti don't be surprised when they decide that you don't support the image they wish to portray. First impressions are key and yes, your appearance will determine customers first impression of you and the buisness.
It depends on the job. In some areas it is unprofessional and unacceptable. While you are free to get as many tattoos and piercings as you like, you are not free from judgement. This is reality. Plan accordingly.
Also, a lot of people come in and whine about how they didn't get a job or they're being discriminated against, forgetting that maybe they just weren't good enough. Tattoos and piercings are, after all, correlated quite heavily with a lower IQ, lower qualifications and lower socioeconomic position overall. Go figure.
Not if you get it in the back yard of a dude named big bubba for a case of beer on a Friday night after a party
Not speaking from experience or anything though
OMG, love Big Bubba!... Apparently (according to a study I heard about on NPR) the more impoverished we are, the more likely we are to make poor decisions with our money... like not that poor people are stupid, but putting the same person in a place of financial comfort and financial strife, he would make worse decisions in the second situations ...humans are strange
You did it to yourself. You weren't in an accident. You weren't born with them. You made the decision to tattoo your face, neck, hands, and hang ridiculous metal objects from your face. Now, act like an adult and accept the consequences of you poor decisions and lack of foresight and don't blame others for your fucking stupidity.
Yes it depends on the field. While tats and piercings are more popular and accepted today, MOST people in the general public still do not do it, and still think it looks unprofessional. If you run a business that deals with the public you probably do not want to alienate any potential customers.
But you should also dress respectable when coming in for a job. Don't attend an interview with a Fortune 500 in board shorts and those ripped-to-hell workout shirt rag things. The first thing I notice (besides smell) is how they're dressed, not how many piercings they have.
I think it also depends on the KIND of tattoos. Political slogans, racy/sexist things, crossed-out names of exes, ect. give an immediate bad impression whereas things that are just "art" like a tree or something isn't really all that bad nor does it draw too much attention.
The judgement might not be from having tattoos, but rather what they look like. I have full sleeves (that you won't see, because I wear long-sleeve shirts at work) and if you come to an interview showing off work from a scratcher, I'm not hiring you. It's a direct reflection of your judgement.
As much as I totally agree with this, I spoke to my uncle about this (who happens to own a large car/truck dealership in my state) and he said that companies hire for their customers, the main aim of hiring any new employe is for the customers, and hopefully getting more customers. A business runs off of its sales, and if the customers don't like the way the business looks, too bad for you. It may not be the right thing to do but it's just how society is these days
