The real frustrating part about hb2 is that we have created a problem which totally did not need to exist. Before all of this drama, no one asked questions if someone who was passing, or even trying to pass female walked into a women's restroom. Honestly, no one had any reason to be concerned about this because there was absolutely no reason to believe that the person had any motives besides using the bathroom of their identified gender. Now that this has become such a hot topic issue, people have started asking questions that they honestly have no reason nor right to ask and it makes things incredibly difficult for transgendered individuals.
I mean I can sort of see how it would be annoying from a functional standpoint if women were expected to pee standing up, but otherwise, I fail to see what the fucking problem is. Didn't we grow out of the purile ew-the-other-gender-is-icky thing in grade school?
Also, what do you mean bathrooms aren't there to make us feel comfortable. That's literally the only reason they distinguish them by gender. There isn't a practical reason, near as I can tell.
The reason there are women's bathrooms is because when women began entering the work place in larger numbers there generally weren't enough bathrooms that accommodated their needs or not enough to compensate for the longer amount of time they take, so bathrooms were created that specifically catered to them. It had nothing to do with comfort, it was for practicality and utility. Bathrooms weren't even segregated before the late 1800s.
That doesn't answer the question, though. These days American workplaces presumably have an appropriate amount of bathrooms, and they are divvied up by gender for, near as I can tell, modesty reasons. I presume people felt uncomfortable taking their clothes off in front of strangers at the best of times, and in front of the opposite sex it would be even worse. And I'm guessing they didn't have stalls back then, which we do today. So I hope you can see why trannies would really rather use the bathrooms that make them the least uncomfortable, and screw what the law says.
"That doesn't answer the question, though."
Yes it does, bathrooms are segregated because women's bathrooms are designed for women.
"And I'm guessing they didn't have stalls back then,"
No they had those in the late 1800s. You'd have to go back to Ancient Rome to find public toilets that weren't sectioned off for privacy.
How is a bathroom designed for a woman any different than one designed for a man, barring the urinal?! This is why I asked that at the very beginning: how many different kinds of toilet do they have where you come from?
And if they've always had stalls, that makes even less sense. You've never had to SEE each other undress and still don't, so why are the bathrooms divvied up by gender anyway, if not to make each gender more comfortable?
More toilets, those little garbage cans for menstrual stuff, generally more sinks, in the higher end one you get table for pursed ans such, as well as occasionally seats for some reason. And yeah, no urinals.
Oh come on. Madame bags and an extra sink wouldn't inconvenience a man trying to use the ladies room any more than the presence of a urinal would inconvenience a woman trying to use the men's. This is NOT a design issue.
You do remember that none of us do this at home, right? I mean, you've presumably shared a bathroom with a significant other or a parent. You had two sinks and a special trash can for menstrual stuff? Or a special purse shelf for women only, Mr. Stuck-in-1940?
It's not unreasonable as such, just insignificant. I'm not saying it doesn't make sense to use the bathroom with your gender sign on it - I'm saying the reason has nothing to do with physiology. Or genitals. 'Cause they're the same damn bathrooms, bar a few largely insignificant details.
Fuckin' hell, you guys have been going at it for two days. I see the passion you both have for understanding anatomy and bathroom usage, but Jesus, at some point you gotta say, "we're not gonna agree."
I think it's the people that are scared of Trans peeps that still have penises going into the womans bathroom and assaulting someone. That's what iv heard anyway, but where I live in the south a lot of people are rude about gay/trans in general so this might not be the reason people are trippin
I don't think the worry is toward trans people assaulting someone. I think the worry is that other people, who are not trans whatsoever, abusing the law. Like if a man sees a woman, or little girl, and decides that he wants to follow them into the bathroom (not sure of his intentions). Can he just claim to be trans if someone stops him, even though he's in a flannel shirt has a full beard and by all rational standards not attempting to even have the appearance of a woman? Does anyone have the right to stop him? Does anyone even have the right to question him?
(And just to be clear I'm not advocating anything here. This is just what I have heard.)
