Pretty sure he did it just because he's a nice guy and to show how easy it is for companies to exploit. John Oliver isn't the type of person to do something like that for attention.
He literally did nothing other than draw attention. If you listened at 18:00, the $15mil was in out of statute debt/uncollectible debt, all he bought was the names of people who at one time owed money. Theoretically he kept another company from getting the information, but he just gave the company that originally had it $60,000. Don't you think they'll still keep selling data if they make that much money for something worth nothing?
1. The company sells it at a loss, once they've decided that they can't make money on it themselves 2. Just because the debt was out of statue, doesn't stop collection agencies from trying to collect. 3. There is no spoon.
I don't need to rewatch the video. He clearly says its out of statute debt. basically a statute of limitations says you had a certain amount of time to sue someone otherwise you can't sue them. This debt can't be sued on anymore, so it's basically worthless. You can try to collect it, but unless someone wants to pay out of the goodness of their heart there is nothing the collector can do.
No need to be rude, man.
Besides, I have time. You know, the thing I didn't waste hours of explaining your mistaken thinking. Which, by the way, I did you a favor, since a great way to make sure you remember and learn is by correcting your own mistakes.
So, just watch the video, my itchy friend. :D
If you actually had anything that was incorrect you should be able to explain if quickly, but since you clearly have nothing better to do than disagree with people in the Internet.
Of course I have better things to do. I'm listening to Game Grumps while I type this.
Speaking of youtube, have you rewatched the video yet? 15 minutes of your leisure time would save me several hours of correction.
If u really want to do charity , do this instead , Debt is poison , people can deal with the rest...
Rewatch the video.
