They are different though. In math, there are formulas and specific ways to do things that will always get you the same answer. But in art/music there are other factors that could result in failure even if you did the same steps as everyone else.
I think of it in the much the same way. You can learn a formula and how to utilize it properly, but but art is not something one can simply learn. It takes a lot of practice and like writing it requires just the tensiest amount of talent.
Yeah, I disagree with the post. They are just urelated.
Both things are good, art to express and math and science to have logical thought.
*BUT* if anyone says someone is stupid because they fail at math, now that's stupid. People are smart in different things, I say if any teacher says that, they are obviously old school, and need to update.
I went to school in latin america. At least when and where I went we had sciences, art, music and even a theater class in elementary school. And in HS we had art and art history.
I had to take art and music classes all the way through school and I was often told I didn't try hard enough because I am completely tone deaf and can't draw a stick figure to save my life.....but I did excel in the math and science.
At my school you had to go to music and art class from grade 1 to 6, in grade 7 to 10 you have two years art and two years music class and in grade 11 to 13 you have to choose one of them (at some schools you can also take theater/drama). Biology, Physics and Chemistry didn't really exist in grade 1 to 4, in grade 5 and 6 we had Biology and Chemistry and both teachers tried to add some Physics. In grade 7 to 10 we always had two of the three subjects in alternating ways. And in grade 11 to 13 we had to choose at least one of them, with the option to choose either a second science class or a second language class. Math is mandatory in all grades. So in my city/country they try to make everyone take everything.
Because math and sciences help you live a full life in the modern world.
Mathematics helps you:
In the grocery store to determine value for your unit of currency.
Estimate your fuel economy in your car, the value for mass transit tickets or charge time and distance for electric cars.
What size pizza is a better value.
It gives you the basics to be able to balance a check book, and determine loan percentages.
Being scientifically literate helps you:
Understand the world around you.
Biology can give you an idea how your body works.
Chemistry can tell you what happens when you cook food or why it's a bad idea to mix household cleaners.
Physics can help you understand how the brakes in your car work... and what happens when they don't.
The bottom line is that you need the basics of math and science to live. Not so much for art.
Actually, in a preindustrial society, music and the arts would have had greater social benefit than math or science would. From art comes recorded language, as the earliest forms of writing are mostly pictographic. Even today, studies have found that musicians improve their social aptitude; it's been hypothesized that this is because they have trained to hear modulations in pitch, which convey a number of important social cues. Art is communication, art is history, and art creates the future, in complement with science. It must be imagined before it can be designed, and it must be designed before it can be.
Goddamn, is physics FUN, though.
One is important to feed yourself with and so is madatory. The others are there for those who want to achieve other things besides just feeding themselves, but you should still be able to do the other.
In response to all the people who say math is just formulas while art is lots of talent, listen. If that was the case we wouldn't be learning art professionally, because it would just be based on how talented we are. But we do study it. Why? Because it does have formulas! Sure they may not work 100% of the time, but without them making good art would still be super hard.
Both things are good, art to express and math and science to have logical thought.
