One of my friends from school has cousins in America, so whenever she visits them at Christmas, we break up a few days before them, she likes to go into their school for a couple of days. She told us about this and how she wouldn't do it because she's not American. At the request of me and a couple of other friends, she's considering yelling "God save the Queen" next time
Get her to just sing "God save the Queen" over and over again while we say the pledge

I'd just hope that someone would respond by singing My Country Tis of Thee. A song the U.S. made that blatantly rips off God Save the Queen as a giant middle finger to the british. I honestly think we should get rid of it but I still consider the concept pretty funny.
By and large, it's a bit of a hold over from the Cold War. Back when school children would proudly recite the Pledge of Allegiance, men would sing the national anthem in the car on the way to work. Everyone stood for the national anthem without question or exception... even the night owls when it was played on TV at the end of the programming day.
To do this was very American and good for the country. If you didn't, you could be consitered "un-american," and that was a potentially precarious distinction. One you might be questioned on, potentially even "officially."
