Actually this was still in use in france, the last person who has been sentenced to the guillotine was killed in 1977 :o

And it was abolished in 1981, if I remember correctly. After Giscard d'Estaing, at the beginning of Mitterrand. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's creepy because I was born in France in 1978, it's so weird to be born in a country that had death penalty.

Fun fact: it didn't take one swing from the metal to cut the head off like you see in the movies. It took as well as 11 hits to the neck to decapitate
