Don't know how to drive an automatic. Was taught to drive manual. First time i drove an auto I almost put my passengers through the windscreen because I put my foot on the clutch but because it wasn't there, I slammed on brakes. Never again

I know how to drive it, it is extremely easy but I feel out of control and freaks me out that there is no clutch. Every now and then when I have to drive one, I really have to focus hard because my left foot doesn't know what to do for the rest of the time I'm not braking

Piss people off by slightly braking with your left foot and accelerating with you right foot. They slow down because of the brake lights and then don't realize why you are moving away from them. I do this when people travel to close to me

Manuals are so much more fun to drive. My first vehicle was a manual. I bought it and then had to learn to drive it. Popped the clutch a lot.

My three criteria for car-buying: A/C, power windows, manual transmission. I am like @puddlestheduck when driving an automatic.

I learnt to drive a manual on my grandparent's farm when I learnt to drive in general. Haven't driven one on the road yet, though, since I'm still on my L's.

In Norway, manual is the most common (by far) type of car to drive. I've only driven manual.

In the whole of Europe, manuals are the most common transmissions. I'm on my 4th car, and it's a 6 speed manual, the previous ones were all 5 speeds. The company vans I drive are 6 speed manuals. All other people's cars I've driven were manuals, save one. I once drove an auto, and didn't think it added anything. It took all of 30 seconds to adjust.

I was told that clutch in, gas out. Clutch out, gas in.

I know what does what. I just get confused when to do what?

Clutch all the way when you start the car, and change gears. When starting the car, release the clutch slowly. The car will drive forewards on the clutch, that's when you'll begin to gas. When driving very slow, or slowing down for a small period of time and dont want to change gears, press the clutch in lightly to make the engine happier. But remember to not gas at the same time, because when you clutch the gas is disconnected, so it just makes sound.

Norway too for the normal one. But you can get a licence for manual cars, but then you're not allowed fo drive stick.

So is it not normal to own a manual car in the US?

Nope. Almost all cars now are automatic

No human can adapt to subtle driving changes like a computer can, you get more mpg with an automatic, with lower emissions to boot, just like usa laws demand. Manuals may still be bought, but must be ordered directly from the manufacturer at a higher cost and higher lifetime fees to offset the extra emissions. Thems the breaks.
