During the day, I might even take it as a compliment, depending of what they shout. At night I get a bit spooked but my ultimate solution to this (both during the day & night) is staring them dead in the eye so they know you're not to be messed with, same with guys who shamelessly stare. My bf said it's a bad idea because they might take it as a challenge, but that's why I only do this in crowded places, when I'm completely alone I pretend not to notice them and just keep walking.
I call bs on that. I bet you'd be scared shitless. I do martial arts and even I get nervous when a group of drunk guys starts shouting "eyy hot cheeks c'mere let's fuck" at me. They're mostly harmless but never underestimate the strenght of a drunk group of people, crowd mentality mixed with alcohol is a dangerous thing, and I say this as someone who's friends with a girl who got raped by a group of drunk guys while walking home from a concert. Sure when they yell "you're pretty" I take it as a compliment and keep walking, but if you say you totally would not be nervous around a group of people who yell gross shit at you, you're a liar or maybe just don't realize how creepy the situation is cause you never had it happen to you.
It's intimidating. It happened to me for the first time when I was 8. I've always looked older than I actually am, so I guess they thought I was of legal age. Back then it was one of the most frightening things that had ever happened to me.

The thing is is that boys are raised differently than girls. Boys have more freedom to do what they want whereas girls are taught that if they go out in the day or in the dark or by themselves they might be kidnapped, raped, assaulted, abused or left dead in a ditch by a man. And that mindset can follow you for the rest of your life

"I bet you'd be scared shitless."
Nah, I don't think so.
"I say this as someone who's friends with a girl who got raped by a group of drunk guys while walking home from a concert."
A likely story.
@peachypersimmon
Yeah, that's probably the problem more than anything else.
Garlog, I know that you think you wouldn't be scared because everyone believes they are invincible until they actually face the situation, but I'm telling you, if this happened to you, I doubt you would just walk past not giving a shit. You're usually quite reasonable so I don't understand how can you just dismiss this as "I wouldn't be scared because I'm not a coward, unlike all women."
As to what concerns the story, it's true whether you like it or not.

I never said I know that.

No, I'm pretty sure that's what would happen. I might be a little annoyed, I guess.
"I wouldn't be scared because I'm not a coward, unlike all women."
I never actually said all women were cowards. The greentext arrow implied that I was suggesting that the picture makes it seem like all women are cowards.
On a side note, can you see the text that I replaced my deleted comment with?
I see. I'm only vaguely familiar with the greentext format so excuse me for that. In that case I agree that the text implied something which is not true. I still think it's hard to keep your calm in a situation like this, especially when you're a girl who's on average physically weaker than a guy because of differences in metabolism, and a group of older, taller, heavier, and probably stronger guys start shouting obscenities at you, but in any case that's a situation you'll hopefully never get into, creepy staring and catcalling is almost an everyday thing for me but I wouldn't want anyone else to go through it cause it's creepy and gross.
I do indeed. I didn't know funsubstance could do that.
From my personal experience, 99% of the time a man shouts a at a girl it really is obscenities. I don't even remember when a man I don't know shouted anything else but I can imagine the situation, I guess. If it's anything else, obviously I'll listen and so will any rational person.
"Let's shout at her! That's attractive right? Birches luuuuuurve letches!"
Holy shit it works.
