I appreciate that people are exercising the freedom of speech, however I wonder what they hope to accomplish? He won fair and square, no point whining about it now.
Technically true. However the electoral college is made up of many different electoral colleges. All major parties have their own electoral college in each state. Whatever the majority of that state votes determines whether the "Republican" or "Democrat" or "Other" electoral college actually votes. So there can be 10 electoral colleges in each state, but only 1 from that state gets to vote.
Long story short: in order for that to happen, Republicans, appointed by Republicans, specifically to vote Republican, in a state that voted Republican, would have to vote Democrat.
If the population voted then most of California would decide who the next president is. The system was designed to give EVERY state a voice, and let them have influence on the election, rather than letting highly populated states pick the president over others.
Why?if california has more people why shouldn't it get more of a say? The president isn't governing geography, he's governing people. So the vote should be based on people not geography.
Nevermind then. I want you to think of it like this in Iraq during Sadam's rule he was democratically elected by the majority of the population. Why? Because he held the faith that most of the country held. What did he do with that power? He punished the minority groups such as Christians and Muslims following the other type of Islam. Another example would be Syria. Assad has been in power by a 99% vote for nearly his entire time in power. Why? Voting at gun point because the majority has control of the government. The electoral college is about protecting the minority. Not furthering the stance of the majority.
What's best for Californians is not necesassarily best for what's going on in New York, Illinois, Hawaii, Alaska, Florida, Wyoming, or Colorado. It rewards the state of California by electing a President that caters to their whims, at the expense of the rest of the states. If that system existed, California would be kicked out of the union, or, the Electoral College would exist to give equal power to EVERY American.
Then maybe the president shouldn't be making those decisions. Or rather, those decisions shouldn't be universal. Things like water restrictions, should be decided on a state by state basis. However, things like abortion, gay rights, etc... Do not affect one region any more than the other. And again, if Either California or some other group of states is going to be disadvantaged, which should it be? Smaller size or smaller population? I say population.
You do understand, looking at your previous comments, that in our current system that California does have a larger say in the electoral college than any other state based on its population.
The reason larger-than-others groupings of population do not have greater power and influence is to give ALL members of the union the right to have power to affect decisions on a national level like the Election. That is what democracy is, giving a choice to EVERYONE, and allowing that choice to have power on the level of everyone else. California does not get to call the election via population because voting like that isnt voting. Every other state, if they do not want what Cal wants, have to all universally vote in oppostion, not allowing them to vote for thrid party candidates, or who they actually want to see elected. We are a Democratic Republic, and it is set up so every state has equal footing with the rest.
My point is that this shouldn't be the case because it should be about the PEOPLE not the fucking states.
